ECU flashing service

IMMO Off — disabling the immobiliser in ECU software

IMMO Off is a software disabling of the immobilizer, allowing the engine to start without the factory security system check.

IMMO Off — disabling the immobiliser check in ECU software

IMMO Off disables the factory immobiliser check inside the control unit so the engine starts when a proper key match cannot be restored: after an ECU is replaced with a donor unit, when the immobiliser module fails, or when the engine runs outside its original car. It is a service for workshops and for legitimate repair only. Send us the data read from the unit and get a ready-to-flash file with corrected checksums, on average in 30–60 minutes.

How the immobiliser checks the key

An immobiliser stops the engine from being started and driven away without its own key. In the EU it has been mandatory on all new passenger cars since 1998, and it worked: a study in The Economic Journal estimates that electronic immobilisers cut car theft by about 40%. The system is taken seriously, and it is tied to several modules at once.

The key holds a transponder chip with no battery. When the key is in the ignition lock, an antenna next to the lock powers the chip with a field and reads its code. That code goes to the immobiliser module, which usually lives in the instrument cluster or in a separate unit. The immobiliser module and the engine ECU exchange coded messages, and only once that exchange matches does the ECU allow the engine to start by releasing fuel and ignition. No match, and starting is blocked.

The immobiliser key-check chain The chip in the key sends a code through the antenna to the immobiliser module, usually in the instrument cluster. The immobiliser module and the engine ECU exchange coded messages. If the exchange matches, the ECU allows the engine to start and releases fuel and ignition, otherwise starting is blocked. The codes in this exchange are not fixed: modern systems use changing codes and encryption, so overhearing and replaying a single reply does not work. For the workshop that leads to a practical point: the ECU is bound to one specific car, and you cannot simply fit a unit from another vehicle, because it carries its own codes and the exchange with the immobiliser will not match. On some cars the instrument cluster is part of the check too, and on newer models so is the transmission control unit. That is why any repair touching the ECU or the immobiliser almost always needs separate work on the security side.

How to tell it is the immobiliser

An immobiliser failure behaves in a recognisable way. The most common signs:

  • the starter cranks but the engine will not catch;
  • the engine fires for a second and stalls straight away;
  • a key symbol, or a car-with-key symbol, flashes on the dashboard;
  • it all started right after an ECU swap or repair, an instrument cluster repair, or on some cars after a flat or replaced battery.

This does not convict the immobiliser on its own: a failed crankshaft sensor or fuel system behaves the same way. So diagnose first. Read faults in all modules, check whether the key code reaches the immobiliser module, and only then decide whether any work on the security is needed at all. If the key is not recognised because of a flat battery in the remote or a lost match, the immobiliser is not the culprit and there is nothing to disable.

Three ways to get the engine starting again

Disabling the check is neither the only option nor the first one. The first question is whether the factory immobiliser can be kept.

Adaptation

  • a key or a new ECU is matched to the car with its access code (PIN/CS)
  • the immobiliser keeps protecting the car
  • the factory route when the access code is available

Cloning

  • the immobiliser data is transferred from the old unit to a new, donor one
  • the new ECU behaves as the original and protection stays in place
  • works when the old unit can be read

IMMO OFF

  • the immobiliser check is disabled in the unit
  • needed when adaptation and cloning are impossible, or the factory immobiliser hardware is gone
  • the immobiliser protection no longer works

If adaptation or cloning is possible, that is usually the way to go, since the car keeps a working immobiliser. IMMO OFF is for the cases where those routes are closed. Which route is open depends on the make, the immobiliser generation and the access code and reads you actually have to hand.

When IMMO OFF is used

Legitimate repair

  • an ECU replaced with a donor unit when adaptation and cloning are impossible
  • failure of the immobiliser module or of the instrument cluster that runs it
  • a mismatch between the immobiliser and the ECU that cannot be fixed the factory way
  • an engine moved to a test bench or a motorsport car without the factory immobiliser wiring

Not for this

  • a car the customer has no rights to
  • attempts to start someone else's or a stolen vehicle
  • replacing a working key match just to save time

Disabling the check only removes protection on the engine side. The alarm, central locking and the mechanical steering lock are separate and are not touched by this file. The key is still needed to get into the car and release the steering lock where one is fitted.

Keep in mind that the immobiliser is not tied to the ECU alone. If you replace or repair the instrument cluster, or the transmission control unit on newer models, describe in the order what exactly was done: it affects which solution is right for your car. The more accurate the source data, the fewer surprises when you put everything back together.

What changes in the software

Only the immobiliser-check logic inside the unit changes: the ECU no longer demands a reply from the factory system and allows the engine to start. The rest of the engine calibration stays stock. Checksums are recalculated, so the file is ready to flash.

For an ECU swap, use a donor unit with the same hardware number and, where possible, the same software version, so there is less to reconcile with the rest of the car. Once fitted, other modules may notice a VIN or part-number mismatch and log their own faults. That is a separate job, unrelated to the immobiliser: we will go through your list, and some of those codes can be closed with the DTC OFF option.

To put the factory immobiliser back, flash the saved original file or match the ECU the factory way. That is why you should always keep the stock file. Returning to the factory state is Reset to Stock.

What to send and how to order

Different units need different data. Some only need a full flash read, on others the immobiliser data sits in the EEPROM and its dump is needed too. The read has to be full and intact: a truncated or corrupt dump is no good for immobiliser work, because the data you need may be exactly in the part that was missed. If you are not sure what to read and how, tell us the unit and the situation and we will advise. Bench reading pinouts are in the ECU Pinout section, and whether a solution exists for a unit is in the ECU database.

  1. Read the data from the unit with the tool you use: a full flash and, where needed, the EEPROM. We need an unmodified read.
  2. Upload the files to the portal, select IMMO OFF and describe the job: ECU replacement, immobiliser failure, engine on a bench. It helps us build the file for your case.
  3. Get the finished file with recalculated checksums, on average within 30–60 minutes.
  4. Flash the file, fit everything back for an ECU swap and check that the engine starts. If it fires up and holds idle, the immobiliser side is done.

Supported ECUs are listed below by make. If yours is not there, or the car has non-factory security, send the file with a request anyway and we will check the software and tell you whether a solution is realistic for your case.

IMMO Off is intended only for repairing vehicles the customer has a legal right to: replacing a failed ECU, a failed immobiliser or instrument cluster, or running an engine outside its original car. Disabling the factory security of someone else's or a stolen vehicle is illegal. Responsibility for the lawful use of the file lies entirely with the customer.

Frequently asked questions

How is IMMO OFF different from key adaptation and cloning?

Adaptation and cloning keep a working immobiliser by matching a key or unit to the car. IMMO OFF disables the check and is used when those routes are closed, for example without an access code or without the factory immobiliser hardware.

What is the service meant for?

Only for legitimate repair of vehicles the customer has rights to: replacing an ECU with a donor unit, a failed immobiliser module or cluster, or running an engine on a bench or a motorsport car.

Will the car run without a key after IMMO OFF?

As far as the immobiliser is concerned, the engine starts without the check. But the key is still needed to unlock the car and release the steering lock, and the alarm and central locking work separately.

What do I need to send for an order?

It depends on the unit: some only need a full flash read, on others the immobiliser data is in the EEPROM and its dump is needed. If you are not sure, tell us the unit and the situation and we will advise.

Does the factory alarm stay in place?

Yes. IMMO OFF only disables the immobiliser check in the ECU. The alarm, central locking and the mechanical steering lock are not affected by this file.

Can the immobiliser be put back?

Yes, as long as the original file is saved: flash the stock file or match the ECU the factory way. That is why you should always keep the original.

My ECU is not in the list. What now?

Send the file with a request: we will check the software and tell you whether a solution exists for your unit.
