AGS Off disables the active grille shutters in the engine ECU software. The ECU stops driving the shutter actuators and stops checking them, so the faults and the Check Engine light go away even when the shutters are broken, freeze up or have been removed together with the stock bumper. For tuners: send us the original file and get a ready-to-flash file with corrected checksums, on average in 30–60 minutes.
Where active grille shutters sit and what controls them
The shutter unit is a plastic frame with pivoting vanes between the grille and the radiator. Many cars have two of them: an upper unit behind the grille and a lower one behind the bumper intake. The BMW X5 G05 and the G20 3 Series are built this way, and so are the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. On the Ford F-150 with the 2.7 and 3.5 turbo engines, the lower unit serves the charge air cooler.
A small electric actuator turns the vanes. On Fords the travel is 90° from closed to fully open, in 16 steps. The engine ECU commands the actuator over the LIN bus, and the actuator reports back its position and any fault. On the F-150 a self-calibration of about 15–20 seconds runs at every engine start while the ECU checks the vane travel.
The ECU decides from road speed, coolant and outside air temperature and the pressure in the A/C circuit. For the lower unit on Ford turbo engines it also looks at boost pressure and charge air temperature. Other layouts exist too: on the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid the actuator receives data over CAN from several control units at once.
When the shutters close and when they open
While the engine is cold the shutters stay shut, so it warms up faster. They also close on the motorway, where less air is forced under the bonnet and the car slips through the air more easily. Ford put the gain from fully closed shutters on the Mondeo at up to 6% of aerodynamic drag. As soon as cooling is needed, the vanes open.
| Situation | Shutters | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up after a cold start | closed | general principle |
| Motorway driving | closed | Toyota: at 37–93 mph |
| Hot coolant | open | Toyota: from 167 °F (75 °C) |
| Hot weather | open | Toyota: from 95 °F (35 °C) outside |
| Ignition off | open up | Toyota, so they do not freeze shut |
| LIN communication lost | actuator opens by itself | Ford F-150: after 10 s |
Thresholds are taken from Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2020 and Ford F-150 service information. Other makes use their own figures.
Why grille shutters throw faults
The unit sits right at the nose of the car and takes everything the road throws at it. Causes named by manufacturers and suppliers:
- Ice and snow. GM issued an engineering information bulletin for the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain: Check Engine on, P059F stored, snow packed around the shutter frame. For the lower flap BMW says plainly that a fault logged below 45 °F (about 7 °C) most likely means the flap was briefly frozen, and the code can simply be cleared.
- Debris and stones jam the vanes. BMW does not treat these cases as warranty defects.
- Impact and front-end repair. The frame and vanes are plastic and get distorted after a crash or careless bumper fitting. On GM pickups there must be at least 10 mm between a vane and the horn.
- Connectors and wiring: water and corrosion in the connector, a short in the actuator wiring.
- The actuator itself or broken vane levers.
Cars react differently. GM and Chrysler light the Check Engine lamp, BMW shows a check control message or the same lamp, while an F-150 driver gets no indication of a shutter fault at all. Toyota displays a warning and switches the system off. Shutters stuck closed are the real danger: Continental states plainly that faulty shutters lead to engine overheating.
| Code | Meaning | Seen on |
|---|---|---|
P059F | Shutter "A" (upper): performance, stuck | GM, Toyota and others |
P05AE | Lower shutter: performance | GM |
U0284 / U0285 | Lost communication with shutter actuator 1 / 2 | GM |
P1D73 | Shutter performance | Chrysler Pacifica 2018 |
0x138207, 0x21B042 | Flap blocked: upper / lower | BMW G05, G07, G20 |
When AGS Off makes sense
Worth disabling
- the shutters came off with the stock bumper or grille
- a larger intercooler now sits where the lower unit was
- the unit was smashed in a crash and the front end is not rebuilt to factory spec
- the actuator keeps failing and replacing the unit is not worth it
Diagnose first
- a one-off fault logged in freezing weather
- vanes packed with dirt or snow
- only a communication fault is stored and nobody has checked the connector and wiring
What changes in the file
The shutter control function is switched off in the file: the ECU no longer commands the actuators, no longer waits for their reply and no longer checks vane travel. P059F, communication faults and shutter messages stop appearing, even with the unit gone from the car. The fan, the thermostat and the rest of the cooling logic run on the stock calibration. Checksums are corrected, so the file is ready to flash.
The engine ECU is not always the only module involved, as the RAV4 Hybrid shows. That is why there is no ready list of ECUs for this option: send the file with a request and we will check whether there is a solution for your ECU. In the same order you can add DTC Off for other codes, or Stage 2 if the car now has a bigger intercooler. Engine operating temperature is changed by a separate option, Engine Temperature Fix.
What to do with the shutters themselves
- Remove them or fix them open. Never leave them closed: the radiator would get no airflow. On Fords the actuator drives itself open when LIN commands stop, but only if it works and has power, so do not rely on it.
- The connector of a removed actuator needs protecting from water.
- Tell the owner that without shutters the engine takes longer to warm up in winter and the car is a little less slippery at motorway speed.
- After flashing clear faults in all modules, warm the engine until the fan comes on and check that no new codes appear.
How to order the file
- Read the original file from the engine ECU via OBD or on the bench. Bench pinouts are in the ECU pinout section.
- Upload the file to the portal and select AGS OFF. In the comment, say whether the shutters are removed and which codes are stored.
- Get the finished file with corrected checksums, on average in 30–60 minutes.
- Flash the file, clear the faults and check the car with the engine warm.
Keep the original: if the unit goes back on, flashing the stock file is all it takes.
Already have the file? Upload it to the portal and select AGS OFF, the finished file arrives on average in 30–60 minutes.
Order AGS OffFrequently asked questions
Will the engine overheat after AGS Off?
No, as long as the shutters are removed or fixed open, so air always reaches the radiator. Leaving them closed is the danger, which is why the unit must come off or be locked open.
Can I just unplug the actuator?
That does not clear the fault: the ECU loses the actuator and logs a communication code such as U0284 on GM, and many cars light the Check Engine lamp. To stop the faults, the function is disabled in the file.
Why does the shutter fault appear in winter and then go away?
The vanes freeze or pack with snow. GM described such cases with P059F, and BMW states that a lower flap fault logged in freezing weather can simply be cleared.
Will the engine take longer to warm up?
Yes, a little: closed shutters helped the warm-up. At motorway speed the car is also slightly less slippery; Ford put the gain from closed shutters at up to 6% of aerodynamic drag.
I am fitting a different bumper and a bigger intercooler. Do I need AGS Off?
Yes, that is the typical case: the stock shutters no longer fit, and without them the ECU logs faults. AGS Off can go into the same file as Stage 2.
Can the shutters be refitted later?
Yes. Put the unit back and flash the original file, so always keep the stock file.
Does AGS Off work on every car with shutters?
Not always: on some cars the engine ECU is not the only module controlling the shutters, as on the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Send the file with a request and we will check whether the shutters can be disabled on your ECU.
How long does the file take?
On average 30–60 minutes.
