The ISN (Individual Serial Number) is a unique serial number by which the engine control unit syncs with BMW's security system (CAS, EWS, FEM/BDC). Reading and writing the ISN is needed when replacing or repairing the ECU so the new unit pairs with the car and starts the engine.
